Satan Isn’t The Ruler Of Hell

One of the great deceptions in this world and even in Christianity today is that the devil is the king of Hell. Popular culture such as music, Hellywood movies and TV, and even literature all paint a picture of Satan as the ruler of Hell. This is completely unBiblical and false. What does the Bible teach about this subject? We know that Satan is on this earth:

“And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” Job 1:7

Satan isn’t just roaming the world after he was cast out of Heaven, he is actually the god of it:

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” 2 Corinthians 4:4

Satan is the god of this world, it doesn’t mean he is in control of it but he is the god of the ways of the world. The sin, the new age movements, the anti-God sentiment, the false religions, liberalism, he has been doing this for a long time and is good at what he does. He is not a red horned looking monster that he is often depicted as, if he was who would want to follow him? The Bible teaches he is a beautiful angel of light, that is how he ensnares so many souls and starts so many false religions:

“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” 2 Corinthians 11:14

The world has the wrong idea of Satan as some devil sitting on a throne in his kingdom of Hell. Some people will say “my friends will all be in Hell so it will be a big party”. Some will even believe that if they serve Satan in this life that they will get some special position in Hell and it won’t be that bad. Some people even say Heaven will be boring because none of their party animal friends will be there. This is what Satan wants you to think. So who is in charge of Hell? God is. It is a place of God’s wrath that is designed for Satan and his angels where people will unfortunately choose to go. It is not a party, it is not a kingdom, it really is not even a place where anything will happen or anyone will be recognized, it is a place of everlasting destruction in flames, everyone in Hell will be being destroyed by fire without end for all eternity.

“7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

Contrary to popular belief Satan isn’t even in Hell yet, but he knows he is going to end up there and wants to take you with him. Why? Because you were created in the image of God and Satan hates God. Satan knows his eternity will be non stop burning and immolation with worms that never die, constantly in the process of being destroyed in flames without it ever ending. He wants you in Hell because he is jealous of you and misery loves company. Satan and his demons will all be burning in Hell, they will not be torturing people or controlling anything that has to do with it, it is a place of God’s eternal wrath on the wicked and all those in Hell will suffer the same fate of eternal burning with Satan and the fallen angels.

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” Matthew 25:41

“And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” Revelation 14:11

As Christians we need to tell people that what they believe about the devil and Hell is a lie and it is a trick to condition them to take Hell lightly like it would be some party. We need to constantly remind the world that there is a way to avoid everlasting destruction in flames and that is salvation through the one and only way, Jesus Christ.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
