Diminish Not A Word

God spoke to Jeremiah many times and most of the time it was to deliver an unpleasant message warning of sin and judgement. God told Jeremiah specifically “diminish not a word” which in today’s slang would be do not sugar-coat anything. So many churches today sugar-coat God’s Word and that is why we have a world that is going straight to Hell.

“2 Thus saith the Lord; Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:3 If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings. 4 And thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord; If ye will not hearken to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you, 5 To hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I sent unto you, both rising up early, and sending them, but ye have not hearkened; 6 Then will I make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.” Jeremiah 26:2-6

Jeremiah did not say “God loves you the way you are and is proud of you but would like you to try to be your best a little harder”. He spoke the truth of God’s Word and sugar-coated nothing and warned of impending judgement. Had Jeremiah preached this message like a pukewarm preacher on TBN he would not have had people wanting to kill him for what he said:

“8 Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die. 9 Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.” Jeremiah 26:8-9

Just like back in Jeremiah’s day there are false Christians and pastors that believe telling the world the Word of God truthfully by warning of sin and Hellfire is “not the right way to reach people”. Most false Christians that speak this way are actually convicted because they enjoy sin themselves. They believe we must be constantly showing love and tolerance when God does not show any tolerance to sin. Is it right to tell a woman that is on her fifth abortion and showing no remorse and still living in a fornicating relationship that “God loves her the way she is” and comfort her in her sins or tell her the truth that she is a baby murdering whore on her way to Hell unless she repents and turns to Jesus Christ? We should never spare someone’s feelings for the truth especially when soul damning sin is involved without remorse, it is spiritual murder to comfort someone in sin like that.

“Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Isaiah 58:1

Most of the time, like in Jeremiah’s case, when you do “cry aloud and spare not” you will be hit with resistance. That is how you know you are doing it the right way. If the world loves your message like they do most of the televangelists and famous mega church skinny-jean wearing effeminate pastors then you may be diminishing God’s Word. Jesus says:

“The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.” John 7:7

There are different methods for different occasions and there is a time to be more compassionate, especially to a person who is coming to a church or preacher for help and is trying hard to get out of sin, not being prideful or boastful about it. Then for those who believe that they can do whatever they want and be okay with God, like in Jeremiah’s day, it is perfectly fine to put the fear of a Holy God into them by diminishing not a word:

“20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” Jude 1:20-23

At Old Brooklyn Christian Church you can be certain that there is no “Word Diminishing” going on whether it is in the church, preaching on the streets, in the nursing home, in the jail, in the prisons, overseas, on youtube or cable TV!
