Ash Wednesday/Lent From An Ex-Catholic

When I cried out for Jesus to save me I was still a Catholic (and loved the religion) and when Jesus saved me and started revealing things to me through the Bible and how it conflicts with many Catholic teachings it was not long until I renounced the Catholic religion and left it for good, thank God. Ash Wednesday and Lent were always something I participated in but never fully understood.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

For Lent we always had to give something up for 40 days. Some people would give up candy, pop, or other harmless things that they enjoy. But many people I knew would give up things like alcohol, pornography, chewing tobacco and other sinful things. The whole Lent would be focused on abstaining from those sins but then on Easter Sunday they could not wait to jump right back in. Someone I knew said as soon as Easter morning came he put an entire tin of Skoal chewing tobacco in his mouth. Others I knew would be cracking open beer after beer finally able to drink alcohol again and unfortunately others would finally get to look at porn again. Sadly this mentality is common with Lent and Catholics. It is like when someone holds their breath underwater for a while and finally gets to the surface they take a huge gasp of air, because they need air to live and breath. It is the same with these sins, they may have successfully avoided them for 40 days but on Easter Sunday, the day that they celebrate Jesus rising from the dead, they take a huge gasp of sin in which defeats the entire purpose of the day and proves that they are still in bondage and need these sins like the body needs oxygen.

“But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.” 2 Peter 2:22

Growing up Catholic I also learned that fasting was giving up meat and usually eating fish on Fridays throughout Lent. The Catholic churches would have huge fish frys on these days serving fried fish and many other delicious foods like French fries, cole slaw, cabbage and noodles, salad, and consider this fasting. Many of the Catholic churches also serve alcohol during these Friday fish frys. This really is not Biblical fasting when you think about it. These churches create a party atmosphere, with people eating and drinking alcohol and the wicked Catholic churches make a large profit off of it. Someone not familiar with the Bible can easily get comfortable in this as a way of life and never end up getting saved. How does this help a church member heading to Hell for being stuck in the bondage of being a drunkard, seeing alcohol being served at the church fish fry? This is one reason why I hate Catholicism with a perfect hatred so much because of all the poor souls that end up burning in Hell because of their bad examples from the church that is supposed to help them follow Jesus.

“For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.” Proverbs 23:21

Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us that we must observe 40 days of Lent and give something up for it. Ash Wednesday is not found in the Bible either it is another manmade Catholic tradition, Biblical sackcloth and ashes are totally different from what the Catholic Church does. It is very common to see famous Catholics on this day, like devout Catholics former vice president Joe Biden and Senator John Kerry wearing ashes on their foreheads in public to show their “faith”. Meanwhile Biden and Kerry both fully support abortion, sodomite marriage, transgenderism and all kinds of other abominations. Most of these people do not read their Bible and are so quick to mark their foreheads that they will be first in line to accept the Mark of the Beast when the Antichrist is here.

“16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” Revelation 13:16-18

There is no such thing as giving up sin for a 40 day period and then jumping right back into it and God being pleased. Jesus calls us to repent from our sins which means turn away from, not take a break from. Jesus gives us power to overcome sin through the Holy Ghost and will give us a new heart that hates sin. Religions like Catholicism will keep people in a vicious cycle that only Jesus can rescue someone from and I am thankful to Him everyday for saving me from it. I was a former drunkard, drug user, porn watcher, had a filthy mouth, wrathful, Satanic music fan, idolatrous and all while being a Catholic and participating in Lent, Ash Wednesday and other traditions which obviously did not help me. It was only by the Grace of God and the Blood of Jesus I was able to become born again and freed from the Satanic bondage of my old sinful life.

“11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” Titus 2:11-13
